SSB Squats

This week has been crazy busy. I'm lucky to have the week end off. Early this morning I went fishing with my kids. With only 5hrs sleep I drove out to the river for some quality family time.

Got home and had to go out shortly after. Got home again and started making dinner. After that I started training.

Leg Swings and Dynamic Stretches.

Rebounding - 20 minutes

SSB Squats - 2 sets/8 reps/bar (50lbs), 4 sets/6 reps/140lbs.

At this point it's getting smokey out and I can feel it in the back of my throat. Time to stop and go in for dinner.

Busy Days

Finishing up my week of leave has been pretty busy. Wednesday I took off to recover from Tuesday. Thursday I went jogging again with my son. I pushed a bit harder this time during the first km. My left knee bothered me during the second km so I just walked. After that I rebounded for 30 minutes. With some sets of Push Ups thrown in for fun.
Friday I was busy again for most of the day. Today was spent helping my daughter move. I was exhausted by 1600hrs when I finally got home. As I haven't done much lifting this week I felt I had to do something.

Rebounding - 30 minutes (6x5 min)

Kettlebell Swings - 6 sets/15,20,20,20,25,25 reps/40lbs.

Stretches.

Tomorrow is another day.

Training and Anniversary

20 May 2000, I married my best friend. My soulmate. She is by far the best thing thats ever happened to me. The last 25 years have been amazing. 25 more? Don't threaten me with a good time.

This morning when I got out of bed I felt horrible. My ankles, knees, hips and back felt terrible. A cup of coffee some breakfast and everything is alright.

Rebounding - 35 minutes (7x5 min)

Laying Leg Raises - 6 sets/15,15,20,20,20,20 reps.

After that I went for a walk around the block with my son.

The little bit of jogging I did felt much better than yesterday. Stupid body, trying to fool me.

Squats... Finally!

Friday my son arrived for am extened visit. It's nice to have the whole family here. Even if it's for a short time. I'll take it. Saturday and Sunday we were busy catching up. I did manage to maintain >10k steps but I didn't lift. Today I got back with a long lost friend.

I haven't done Squats in literally two months. Maybe even longer. Just going through the movement today. But first, this morning I went for a walk with some jogging thrown in just for fun. I gotta get ready for the FORCE test.

After some yard work I moved some things around in the garage and set up the bar for Squats.

Leg Swings and Dynamic Stretches.

Squats - 6 sets/6,6,6,8,10,12 reps/135lbs.

NG High Cable Rows - 3 sets/10 reps/60kg.

More work tomorrow.

Hanging Around

Tuesday during the day I volunteered to clean up around work. Lots of walking. Wednesday I went to a funeral for a fellow veteran I used to work with. See you in Valhalla Walter. I went to work that afternoon. We concluded the work day with an hour of soccer. I haven't played soccer in years. In an effort to move more I gave it my all and dashed as fast as I could. I was concerned my knees would be buggered so I iced when I got home.

This morning I feel pretty good. I'm a bit stiff but not terribly. I have some errands to run before work so theres not a lot of time. Enough for the following.

Rebounding - 30 minutes (6x5 min)

Static Hangs - 6 sets/10-15 sec hold.

The Static Hangs will defenitely help with grip and also decompress me.
I'm also watching what I eat. Since Sunday I've lost 4lbs.

Battle at the Border

Yesterday I competed at my first Strongman competition. What an amazing day spent with outstanding people. There were 51 athletes making it the largest Strongman competition in Manitoba history. With the guidance of Tyler Sigurson (@chudlife) and lots of experienced volunteers everything ran along smoothly. @strongmanitoba is gaining popularity. Here's how my less than spectacular day went.

I was so nervous. My cardio is shit. Not only does the weight hurt but so does the exhaustion. Definetly the number one thing to work on.

Event 1 was 200lbs Axle C&P. I have never cleaned a 200lbs axle so zeroing this event was a strong posibility. I pulled the axle up to my gut three times with completing the clean on one. This is better than anything I did in training so dispite no reps its a win for me.

Event 2 was the Assending Bar Deadlift. Starting weight was 435lbs increasing by 30lbs each rep. I managed 435,465,495lbs but failed 525lbs. Looking back I should have put more effort into 525lbs. Normally its an easy weight for me. Oh well, next time.

Event 3 was a disaster. Three attempts at the opening 20lbs Sand Bag over 15ft. None went over the bar. 20lbs is an easy weight for me but my form is crap. One more thing to work on.

Event 4 was the Dinnie Rings. 215lbs right hand 175lbs left hand. I didn't zero this event. I managed about 6ft on the first pick and 5ft on the second. Considering I only trained this twice and once with competition weight I feel I did ok.

Event 5 was the Haviland Lift. 200lbs sand bag for 50ft and a 185lbs farmers handle for 40ft. Either together or individually. I managed the farmers handle but couldn't lift the 200lbs sand bag.

I finished second of two 50+ master athletes. The areas for improvement are painfully obvious. Lose about 40lbs, improve my cardiovascular fitness and practice the events. This was my first proper Strongman event and I'm not injured. Thats a win.

FORCE Test Practice

Every Monday work has a practice FORCE test. In the interest of keeping my job I gotta pass it before August. Also with Battle at the Border this Saturday it doesn't hurt to push my VO2 a bit. Total time was about 30 minutes.

I felt better this time throught. Still very heavy breathing and I'm not even close to passing the rushes. I'm better for doing it.

Pre Tolstoi

I took Friday off from training except for 30 minutes of rebounding and some Theragun work. Saturday I went to Brickhouse again for the final touches before Battle at the Border. I did four of the five events at a lower than competition weight. I survived.

Warm Ups

Axle Clean and Press - 165lbs/5 reps in one minute.

Competition weight is 200lbs. If I can clean it, I'll press it.

Axle Deadlift - 335lbs/6 reps Opps! Wrong weight. 435lbs/3 reps.

This is the opening weight. Nothing difficult.

Sand Bag Throw - I threw a bunch of time, various weights. The bags I'll throw for competition are 20,25,30lbs. I need to wear my soft belt for this event as all the events a back heavy and I don't need any issues.

Dinnie Rings - I didn't do these. They seemed ok last week. I was able to move the competition weights ok.

Haviland Carry - I've concluded I will carry the bag first then the farmers handle. Yesterday I shouldered the 150lbs bag with relative ease and held 155lbs farmers for the distance. This is the best I've done so far. Competition day will be interesting. Competition weights are 200lbs sand bag and 185lbs Farmers.

Today I kept active with 30 minutes rebounding and Heavy Grips during.

Laying Leg Raises - 6 sets/20 reps.
