Charity Log Lift

Today was the 2026 Charity Log Lift at Iron Age Gym.

So much fun. I still need lots of work overhead. However, I feel like I handled the lifts well.

180lbs

190lbs

195lbs

I did manage to increase my Manitoba Provincial record by 5lbs to 195lbs. Next time with a log over 200lbs for sure.

Bldg 21 Farmers Walk

I'm working tonight so I came in early to do some training.

Kettlebell Swings - 35lbs/20 reps, 55lbs/20 reps.

Squats - bar/6 reps, 135lbs/6 reps, 225lbs/6 reps.

Farmers Walk - 110lbs/40'+40', 160lbs/40'+40', 210lbs/40'+40'.

I need to bring a tape measure so I know how far I'm going. 40' is a rough estimate. With a belt and chalk today I was able to hold the weight. My grip didn't seem that taxed. I do however feel shorter. More compressed. I'm please with my performance today. Gonna be sore tomorrow.

Log Press

The Sandbag work on Monday really kicked my ass. I'm still sore and stiff. Log today felt way heavier than it should have. Once I got warmed up it started to move better.

Rebounding - 60 minutes.

Log Press - 2 sets/6 reps/70lbs, 3 sets/3,4,6 reps/160lbs, 180lbs/3 reps.

Log Curls - 3 sets/12 reps/70lbs.

Cable Triceps Ext - 3 sets/12 reps/30kg.

Stretches and Foam Rolling.

My back feel really tight. Time to role. 180lbs/3 reps give me some confidence to set a PB at the Charity Log Lift this Sunday. Maybe last warm up is 160lbs with attempts180,200,210lbs.

Rack Axel Pulls

I found out that figure 8 straps are not allowed at the upcoming competition. I haven't trained much with regular straps so I need to rectify that. Today I made a good choice to prepare.

Rebounding - 40 minutes.

Kettlebell Swings - 2 sets/20,25 reps/40lbs.

Rack Axel Pulls - 2 sets/6 reps/205lbs, 295lbs/6 reps, 385lbs/6 reps, 475lbs/6 reps.

Static Stretches.

The lowest the rack goes is 19". Yes that's high but it gives me a chance to perfect strap use with an overloaded weight. Good stuff.

Sandbagging It

Again, my head isn't in the game. I should be excited to lift and move heavy things. I keep thinking about how much it hurts. That said, I am dragging my sorry ass to train and I am making consistant improvements. Such as I did today.
I didn't post Saturday. Iron Age Gym was hosting a novice clinic. I went to learn. Which I did but not before overcoming some solid anxiety. Silly considering it went away as soon as I started lifting. We worked up to comletition weight for both log (165lbs) and 14' Axel Deadlift (435lbs). Easy peasy. I've been using figure 8 straps in training for the axel. I'm told nope! Gotta use regular straps. Ok then.
Sandbag training went well today. Still need lots of improvement. Not strong enough yet.

Rebounding - 45 minutes.

Sandbag Bench Squats - 4 sets/4,10,6,12 reps/150lbs, 2 sets/3,6 reps/200lbs.

Static Stretches.

The 200lbs bag is still very heavy. However, this is the best I've done with it despite my crappy motivation.

Kettlebell Swings - 35lbs/20 reps, 55lbs/20 reps.

Cart Drag - 2 sets/???lbs/30'+30'.

Tire Drag - 500lbs - 30'+30'+30'.

Not exact measurements. No support equipment. A few more days like this and I'll be ready.

Squats and Log

Well that doesn't sound right. But, that's what I did today.

Rebounding - 80 minutes.

SSB Bench Squats - 2 sets/12 reps/bar, 2 sets/12 reps/140lbs, 2 sets/12 reps/230lbs.

Standing Log Press - 70lbs/12 reps, 4 sets/6,6,8,8 reps/160lbs.

Standing Log Curls - 3 sets/70,75,80lbs/12 reps.

Static Stretches.

It wasn't intentional to omit Squats from training. There's just so much to focus on. I'll make sure to add them in some form from now on.

I spoke with a sports psychologist this morning on the phone. He pointed out the obvious. Here it goes.

I've spent 20 years as a Powerlifter. Squats, Bench Press and Deadlifts for single heavy reps are now second nature. Lots of the Strongman exercises like Log, Sandbag, keg, axle, ect are new to me but my goal this year is to master them and become Manitoba's Strongest 50+ Man. That's silly. Someone of my age and maturity being such an impetuous child. Of course I'm nervous and somewhat scared of tbe weights, exercises and overall training. It's not a race. If I don't do it this year there will always be next year or any of the years after that. In fact, it's foolish to think I can master an entire sport in one year. Physically I feel awesome. Enjoy the journey not the finish line.

Makes a lot of sense.

SAR Gym Deadlifts

It's been many years since the last time I was bending bars in the Search And Rescue Gym. It's not a large space but it has a really good energy. Probably from the SAR Techs themselves who are fricken' machines.

Light Stretches.

Kettlebell Swings - 40lbs/20 reps, 45lbs/20 reps.

Deadlifts - 2 sets/6,8 reps/225lbs, 315lbs/8 reps, 2 sets/6 reps/365lbs.

Static Stretches.

Again, no belt and no straps. Work kept me till late last night and brought me back in super early this morning. I feel like crap. Today's training was pretty good considering how "blah" I feel. I'm better for putting in some work.

Sandbags

Training went pretty good today. Sandbags hit different than everything else. All those muscles I don't train get hit, HARD!

Rebounding - 60 minutes.

Sandbag Bench Squats - 4 sets/4,5,8,10 reps/150lbs.

Sandbag Picks - 3 sets/4 reps/200lbs.

I finally filled my 200lbs bag to 200lbs. I've never training with this yet so I started slow with just getting under it and breaking it off the ground. I also tried one to get it to my chest. Now I gotta get ready for work this afternoon.

WG High Cable Rows - 60kg/12 reps, 65kg/12 reps, 70kg/12 reps.

The Farmers were more stationary than walking. However I was pleased with my performance. Now I gotta get ready for work.

Log Press

Motivation is fine. It's weird but I'm actually scared to train. Everything hurts. Not in a bad way. Physically I feel amazingly strong. My endurance is shit. So, having to do volume work hurts. This has a negative effect on my motivation and I find myself procrastinating. I'd rather do housework than shoulder a sandbag for reps. I considered talking to someone, a sports psychologist maybe. Something to think about.
Today's training started slow but finished well when I enjoyed some new found overhead strength.

Light Stretches.

Rebounding - 60 minutes.

Log Clean and Presses - 2 sets/12 reps/70lbs, 2 sets/12 reps/120lbs, 140lbs/12 reps, 2 sets/6,10 reps/160lbs.

Log Curls - 70lbs/12 reps, 2 sets/12 reps/75lbs.

All the Log Presses today felt steady and controlled. I'm making progress overhead.

Blah!!!

Again, training lately is getting to me. I'm kind of afraid of training. I know it's going to hurt so I really don't want to do it. I'll come up with a plan to deal with this. There's still lots of time. As long as I'm doing something.

Light Stretches.

Squats (no sleeves) - 2 sets/8 reps/bar, 135lbs/8 reps, 225lbs/6 reps.

Axle Deadlifts (from ground, no belt) - 295lbs/6 reps, 385lbs/6 reps.

Static Stretches.

Blah!!!
